Alma M. Pete, 75, joined her Lord and Saviour peacefully at 11:58 p.m., Monday, February 22, 2010, at Vibra Specialty Hospital in Dallas, Tx, after a lengthy illness and suffering a brain injury. Visitation will be 5-9 p.m., Friday, March 5, 2010 and funeral at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 6, 2010, both to be held at the Greater St. Mary Baptist Church, 1401 Moeling St. Lake Charles, La. Alma was born October 9, 1934, in Opelousas, La., to the late Clessie and Della Milburn. She was the third of nine children and lived in Opelousas until relocating to Lake Charles in 1960. On April 2, 1960, Alma married Clarence Pete, and to this union, 7 children were born and one grandson adopted. Alma received a degree in Elementary Education from Southern University in Baton Rouge, La and a Master degree in Adult Education from Texas Southern in Houston, Tx. As an educator, she had 30 years of teaching in the public school system and 15 years in Adult Education. Alma accepted Christ at the age of 12 and was baptized at Reeves Chapel Methodist Church, in Little Teche, La., under the leadership of the late Rev. Jeff Walton. Upon moving to Lake Charles in 1960, she united with Greater St. Mary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Dr. R. B. House. Up to her life departure, she was still a member of Greater St. Mary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Samuel Tolbert. Alma was an active soldier in the church and held several positions: church clerk; president of the choirs, youth programs, Mission, and Season Saints; director of vacation bible school; and liaison for funeral arrangements. As a pillar of the community, she was involved with many organizations: adult education; government and tutorial programs; an educator for Housing Authority, foster grandparents, and parent connection programs; matron for the Eastern Star-Chapter 48; a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Calcasieu Reading, NEA, CEA, and LEA Associations; a board member for the Moss Regional Hospital; vice president for Legal Service Council, and a member of the Golden Girls organization. Alma leaves to mourn her death, her husband - Clarence Pete; three daughters - Lesia Reed (Ricky) of Lake Charles, La, Karen Cuba (Charles) and Thea (Rose) Cain (Izeal) of Dallas, Tx; three sons - Ardwin (Fish), Kevin and Carver Pete of Lake Charles, La; seventeen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; one sister - Morjorie Jennings (James) of Houston, Tx; three brothers - Samuel, George and Murphy Gene Milburn (Hazel) of Houston, Tx; one aunt - Della Mae Robertson of La Marque, Tx; two uncles - Henry Milburn of Dallas, Tx and Lloyd Milburn of Alexendria, Va; and a host of other relatives and friends.
