Delores Charles
Fontenot
Jan 17, 1942 — Mar 17, 2016
Mrs. Delores Charles Fontenot , 74, was called from her earthly life and went home to join her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Mrs. Delores Charles Fontenot was a life-long resident of Lake Charles, LA. She was born on January 17, 1942, in Opelousas, Louisiana to the late Hector Charles and Delsa Jones Charles. Ms. Delores was self-employed as a License Beautician and was owner and operator of Delores' House of Style Beauty Salon. Her motto was "If your hair isn't becoming to you, then you should be coming to us" . She worked in the beauty industry for over fifty-six years. She was a 1960 graduate of Washington High School, a graduate of Epps Beauty School.
Delores was baptized at an early age at Mt. Olive Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member until the time of her death. She loved her late Pastor Reverend Sidney Fontenot, but absolutely adored her current Pastor Reverend Braylon Harris. She loved hearing Pastor Harris sing. She was a choir member and attended prayer meetings faithfully. Delores will be missed for her beautiful church and hall decorations. She blessed Mt. Olive with all of the beautiful floral arrangements and corsages.
On May 12, 1973, Delores united in Holy Matrimony to the love of her life, Murphy Fontenot and they shared 43 years together. In celebrating their wedding reception, Delores and Murphy were the 1st African-Americans to integrate the Downtowner Hotel and Restaurant. During her last year of fighting pancreatic cancer, Murphy was her sole provider and caregiver. He took her to Baylor-St. Luke's Hospital in Houston, Texas for second opinions, weekly chemo treatments and finally weekly radiation treatments and at the end stayed nightly during hospice care, never giving up on her.
Cherishing her memories are her devoted husband, Murphy Fontenot; daughter, Amanda (Tony) Johnson of Lake Charles; grandchildren Morgan Nell Johnson and Gabriel "Gabe" Karrington Johnson, both of Lake Charles, Louisiana; four siblings, Ester (John) Stills of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Janie (Percy) Dominique of Greensboro, North Carolina, Wanda Charles and Mallory (Rose) Charles both of Lake Charles, Louisiana; two sisters-in-laws, Betty Charles of Carson, California and Barbara Charles of Duncanville, Texas; brother-in-law Larry Edwards of Lake Charles, Louisiana; two godchildren, Mark Edward Stevenson of Zachary, Louisiana and Kimberly Michelle Reed of Lake Charles, Louisiana; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, customers, and friends.
