"Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever." Psalm 23:6
Martha Evonne "Myme" Coleman, namesake of her maternal and paternal grandmothers, was born on May 31, 1948, to the late Richard Sr. and Margie Coleman. She was educated in the public schools of Jennings, Louisiana, and was a proud member of the Jefferson Davis High School Class of 1966.
A lifetime member of St. Paul Baptist Church, Martha faithfully served as the church's financial secretary and as a member of the choir. She was also an avid financial supporter of the church's youth and remained deeply committed to their spiritual growth and development.
Martha continued her education at Grambling State University, earning a Batchelor of Arts Degree and McNeese State University, earning a Master of Education Degree plus 30. She devoted her professional life to educating and nurturing children. She was employed by Allen Parish as a kindergarten teacher and later employed in Jefferson Davis Parish as a special education teacher. She often joked about how they must have wanted her to retire because they appointed her son as her principal. Thus, she immediately retired the next year. After 33 years of dedicated service, she retired, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students, families, and fellow educators.
Until her health began to fail, Martha served and believed strongly in service, education, sisterhood, and community involvement. Her affiliations included serving as past secretary of the Melton Alfred-Johnnie Adams Alumni Chapter of Grambling State University. She was also a member of the National Association of University Women and the Lake Charles Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, along with numerous other organizations.
Martha leaves to cherish her loving memory, her children, Kieran & Tina Coleman; her granddaughter, Avi Dinae; her caregiver, Kizzy Sinegal; her brother, Richard (Anita) Coleman, Jr; her sisters, Cheryl (Lloyd) Crawford, Sr. and Lonetta Barker; her aunts, Dorothy Davis and Josephine Beverly; a dear friend, Berlyn Briggs; and a host of nieces, nephews, godchildren, other relatives, and friends.
Martha's life was marked by faith, education, service, generosity, and love. Her devotion to her family, church, students, and community will remain a treasured part of her enduring legacy.
