Mr. Robert Rubin , of Jennings, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 03, 2021, at the Jennings American Legion Hospital at the age of 93. The Homegoing Services for Mr. Robert Rubin will be held on Thursday, April 08, 2021 at Union Baptist Church, 1014 South Main Street, Jennings, Louisiana 70546. The Reverend Gerald W. Perkins, Sr., will officiate. His visitation will commence at 9 am followed by the funeral at 11 am. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery under the direction of Semien-Lewis Mortuary of Jennings, LA.  Full Military Funeral Honors will be accorded by a Fort Polk Army Squadron.

He was born on April 16, 1927, to Mary Johnson and Maurice Rubin in Jennings, Louisiana. He enlisted in the United States Army Air Force in November 1945 and earned his GED from Bethune-Cookman College while stationed at the Orlando Air Force Base - Orlando, Florida. He subsequently enlisted in the United States Army serving his country until his retirement in January, 1972 at the rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7) as the Chief Hospital Wardmaster at Fort Polk, Louisiana. His remarkable military career included wartime service in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He used his GI Bill benefits to obtain his credentials in nursing.

Upon re-entering civilian life, he worked for Leevac Shipyard near Jennings as the Workers' Compensation Insurance Administrator and Nurse for over a decade before retiring from the workforce as a nurse at the State School in Iota, Louisiana in 1987. After retiring, he enjoyed playing golf well into his late 80's. He later became the very first honorary member of the Jennings Golf and Country Club. He was also a big fan of all types of college and professional sports and loved to watch golf, tennis, boxing, football, basketball, and baseball. He faithfully cheered on Louisiana's own New Orleans Saints, LSU Tigers, and McNeese Cowboys!

He was very active in civic, community, political, and social equity activities and causes from coaching little league baseball to promoting an increase in minority participation in the Big Brothers and Big Sisters' programs in Jefferson Davis Parish. He was appointed and served on the Jennings Zoning Board being elected President for several consecutive years. He was appointed to serve as the President of the 1990 Jeff Davis Parish Reapportionment Committee which helped to increase the number of minority districts on the governing authorities for the Jennings City Council, the Jeff Davis Parish School Board, and the Jeff Davis Parish Police Jury. He was a founding member and President of the influential Jennings Community Alliance for Progress (CAP) political organization. He was appointed to various state governmental committees by both Democratic and Republican Governors of Louisiana working to promote civic engagement, civil rights, and voter participation. He managed multiple political campaigns. Lastly, he served on the Jefferson Davis Parish Democratic Party Executive Committee serving as the Jefferson Davis Parish Coordinator for President Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign which he personally viewed as one of his highest honors and achievements.

Mr. Robert Rubin is survived by his children, Deborah E. Botley, Sharon L. Rubin, and Sheila R. Thibodeaux; his brother, John Johnson; his grandchildren, Corey L. Rubin, Robert D. Strauss Sr., Glynn A. Botley, Brandon Botley, Maegan B. Jackson, Torrie S. Thibodeaux, Donald N. Thibodeaux, and Eric Thibodeaux; his great-grandchildren, Daron Strauss, Allen Botley, Robert D. Strauss Jr., Camdyn L. Jackson, and Freykell Ledger.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Deville-Rubin; his daughter, Connie Rubin-Strauss; his mother, Mary Johnson; his father, Maurice Rubin; his sisters, Aggie B. Mouton, Golden Stroid Jones-Batiste, and Madeline Ethridge-Pierre; and Warren Ethridge.
