Shawn Jay Maris Sr., 49, a native of Mermentau, LA, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 25, 2024. Shawn was born on October 13, 1974, to Dianna Maris-Miller and Roy Mayfield.  He was raised by his parents, Harold Jay and Shelby Godeaux-Maris of Mermentau, LA.
Shawn is known to most as "Grip."  He never met a stranger, he shared his wisdom whenever he could.  Grip had a passion for playing and teaching the game of basketball.  Growing up, he excelled at basketball, baseball and academics, receiving many scholarships, and being a math tutor.  Grip enjoyed spending time with his only child, Shawn Jr. and his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Poppa".

Shawn Jay Maris Sr. leaves to cherish his memories, his son, Shawn Jay Maris Jr; his brothers, Gordon (Stacy), Markham, and Jacob Maris (Amy) and Tony Mayfield; his sisters, Jacquline Maris-Richard (Phillip) and Mable Arceneaux; his grandchildren, Kash, Cole, Carter and Kali Maris; his beloved niece, Ja'Kourtlyn "Tootie" Lawrence; the mother of his son, Shondria Williams-Boutte (Alfred); his bonus mothers, Lorna"Skeeter" Lawrence, Dorothy Breaux, and Cynthia McZeal; his loyal cousin, Kellie Richard-Lege (Lucien); his extended family, Brigette Hollier, Jessica Lawrence, Demetrich Charles, Marcus Lawrence, George Lyons, Kevin Moore, Tim and David McZeal, and Byron Moses; a host of family and friends.

Shawn was preceded in death by his father, Harold Jay Maris; his mother, Shelby Godeaux-Maris; his uncle, Levy "L.J." Johnson; his aunt Gay Guidry; his paternal and maternal grandparents; his birth parents, Dianna Maris-Miller and Roy Mayfield.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, August 31, 2024, at Semien-Lewis Mortuary, 819 N. State Street in Jennings, LA. Visitation and viewing will be held from 1:00pm - 3:00pm.  Celebration Service will begin at 3:00 pm.
